Applying for a care level (now known as a "care degree") is an important step for people who have become dependent on care due to illness or old age. This process can seem complex, but with the right guidance and preparation, it can be simplified. Here is a step-by-step guide to applying for a care degree:
- Application to the care insurance fund
- The first step is to submit an informal written application to the care insurance fund of your own health insurance company. This can be done by the person concerned or a legal representative.
- Assessment by the Medical Service of the Health Insurance Fund (MDK)
- After receiving the application, the long-term care insurance fund commissions the MDK to carry out an assessment. An MDK assessor will make an appointment to visit the applicant at home and determine the level of care required.
- Prepare assessment
- It is helpful to have information and documents ready before the appointment with the MDK assessor that clarify the care needs. This includes medical certificates, medication schedules or a list of daily activities for which support is required.
- Result of the assessment
- After the assessment, the MDK prepares a report and sends it to the long-term care insurance fund. This report contains a recommendation for a specific care level.
- Decision of the long-term care insurance fund
- The care insurance fund makes a decision on the application on the basis of the MDK report. The applicant receives a written decision in which the assigned care level and the associated benefits are listed.
- Right of objection
- If you do not agree with the decision of the long-term care insurance fund, you have the option of lodging an appeal within four weeks of receiving the decision.
- Regular review
- Even after a degree of care has been recognized, the need for care is reviewed at regular intervals. It is possible to apply for a new assessment if the need for care increases.
Important note: You should apply for a care degree as early as possible, as the benefits from the long-term care insurance fund are only granted retroactively from the month in which the application is submitted.
It is advisable to seek advice from a care advice center or a care support point if you are unsure or have questions. These often offer free advice and support when applying for a care degree.
